Land Degradation Mapping

Land Degradation Mapping (LDM) Project was carried out under National Resource Census programme initiated by Department of Space, GOI, to do a nationwide land degradation mapping on 1:50,000 scale for the whole country.

Land resources are very important for ensuring food security. Population growth and unscientific land utilisation incompatible with its carrying capacity has accelerated land degradation. LDM aims at generating base line information on degraded lands using multi-date satellite data for scientific use and monitoring. The information thus generated will aid planners in decision-making as well as in scientific management of land resources.

The parameter considered for generation of land degradation map are soil erosion, soil type and texture, slope, water logged, Landuse, landform and wasteland.
The project was completed in 2010.
