National Wasteland Change Analysis Project

National Remote Sensing Centre, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Space, Government of India in collaboration with different State, Central Government Departments and Institutions has completed three mapping exercises of wastelands for the country using remotely sensed satellite data on 1; 50,000 scale.

Since the launch of wastelands mapping project, various government agencies have taken up the reclamation of wastelands particularly through the implementation of watershed programmes in the country by consulting these database. All the wastelands mapping exercises were taken up by using various mapping methods, different map projection systems and varying datasets. All these have contributed to difficulty in depicting the wasteland changes to be shown spatially.

The new initiative on Wasteland Change Analysis was aimed at reporting the changes in wastelands in India using IRS LISS III 2005-06 and 2008-09 data sets. This project is sponsored by the Ministry of Rural Development, Govt. of India.

Objectives:

The proposed project envisages the following objectives:

  • Update the wasteland vector layer of 2005-06 using three season satellite data of 2008-09.
  • Identify and depict areas with area with major wasteland change between 2005-06 and 2008-09.
  • Preparation of Wastelands category-wise spatial change statistics and summation in the form of report and atlas.
