Safe Drinking Water Plants

The department identified that iron contamination in potable water is rampant particularly in Dimapur district and also in some other parts of the State. To curb the problem, the Department in association with the Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata, and the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India installed a total number of fifteen “Safe Water Drinking Plants” at various places in the state during 2010-2011.

The water plants were mostly installed in Dimapur, as Dimapur was identified as a place with lot of iron contamination. The installation was found to be very effective with demands from colonies and runs on sustainable basis with private partnership system.

With the accumulation of heavy metal poisoning over the years, affecting both physical and mental health, this Water Plant which has micro filtration and does not allow big molecules to pass through and dismisses not only metal but bacteria and other organic impurities is very essential. These plants are based on Ceramic Membrane Filtration developed by Central Glass & Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata.
